2203 - Overarching NHSN Device-Associated Infection Surveillance Rules

This session presents an overview of the basic common concepts and rules for applying National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) surveillance protocols for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) as well as NHSN tools available to support that surveillance.

Katherine (Kathy) Allen-Bridson is the lead for the National Healthcare Safety Network’s Protocol and Training Team with the CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion. The Protocol and Training Team is responsible for developing surveillance definitions and protocols for healthcare-associated infections, and training individuals, groups, and validators on application of the definitions. Her 25 years of professional nursing experience includes over 10 years in infection control at a large teaching hospital and four years as the state coordinator of an international multistate infectious disease surveillance project at the Michigan Department of Community Health. Kathy is a published author in the field of infection control and a manuscript reviewer for the American Journal of Infection Control. Her BSN is from the University of Michigan and her MPH is from the University of London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Karoline Sperling, MPH, MLS(ASCP)CM, CIC is currently an infection preventionist for Park Nicollet Health Services in St. Louis Park, Minnesota and has almost 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Her background includes working as a clinical microbiologist before moving into infection prevention. She has over eight years of experience in the field and is board certified in infection prevention and control.
Karoline has a Masters of Public Health degree in environmental health and Bachelors of Science degree in medical technology from the University of Minnesota. She is an active member of APIC and has been a member of the APIC MN Conference Committee for eight years, serving as conference chair in 2013, and also a current member of the APIC National Annual Conference Committee.
