Concurrent Education Session - 60 minutes

1402 - Water and Healthcare-Associated Infections: The Importance of Developing and Implementing a Water Management Plan

Wednesday, June 14
4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Oregon Convention Center, E 145-146

This session will focus on building plumbing systems and discussing the link to transmission of opportunistic pathogens that naturally occur in potable water systems. Developing a water management plan and implementing this plan will reduce infectious complications associated with potable water within your facilities. These infections are primarily caused by organisms that will form biofilms within the plumbing system. Attendees will learn what what opportunistic pathogens are associated with plumbing/potable water systems — including, but not limited to, Legionella pneumophila, Mycobacterium spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Ralstonia, Sphingomonas, Stenotrophomonas — and how to implement risk management guidelines and standards such as ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015 (Legionella specific), the CDC toolkit for developing a water management program (Legionella specific), and NSF 444 (in development).
