1503 - Sterile Processing Departments: What’s New with AAMI and AORN?

This session reviews sterile processing department (SPD) updates from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). Attendees will review best practices in sterile processing and identify and define define current published standards and guidelines on high-level disinfection and sterilization (HLD/S).

Amanda Benedict, AStd, is the Senior Manager, Standards at the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). Her work includes managing the AAMI Sterilization standards program, including the Secretariat and U.S. TAG Administrator for ISO/TC 198 on sterilization of health care products; and the AAMI Biological evaluation standards program. Previously, Amanda managed the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) program to develop national and global standards for human resource management and led research into workplace practices, professional competencies, and health care studies. In addition, she has been a member of the SES - The Society for Standards Professionals since 2012, serving as the Chair for the 2015 and 2016 SES Annual Conferences, and currently serves on the SES Board of Directors. Ms. Benedict holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a Master of Arts in education and human development from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Rose Seavey is President/CEO of Seavey Healthcare Consulting. She served on the AORN Board of directors (2008-2010) and was President ASHCSP (2003). She has received numerous merit awards from AORN and IAHCSMM. Seavey has authored a book published by AAMI and serves on AAMI committees writing standards.

Susan Ruwe is a master’s prepared registered nurse. She has been a certified professional in healthcare quality since 2007 and certified in infection control since 2014. She is trained in group facilitation and Lean Six Sigma for Healthcare. She has been employed in quality improvement and infection prevention roles since 1990 with experiences in home health, ambulatory physician clinic, ambulatory surgery, and hospital domains. She has developed and implemented quality improvement process, policies, and tools for two employers. She has experience in quality improvement planning, leading performance improvement teams, root cause analysis, failure mode effects analysis, and coordinating regulatory surveys.
