2104 - The Nitty Gritty on Flexible Endoscopes

Thursday, June 15
10:15 AM - 11:15 AM
Location: Oregon Convention Center, D 135-136

This presentation will provide an overview and discussion of the evidence related to some of the hot topics surrounding the processing flexible endoscope. These topics include potential modification of the Spaulding classification system (requiring sterilization of items that directly or secondarily enter mucous membranes), the questionable need for an alcohol flush, the use of enhanced methods for processing flexible duodenoscopes, the potential for transmission of prions via flexible endoscopes, disinfection of endoscopes used with single-use sheaths, and the use of chlorine dioxide wipes for disinfection of nonchanneled flexible endoscopes. Following evidence-based recommendations for processing flexible endoscopes is critical to minimizing the risks for endoscopy-related infection and providing safe patient care. This presentation will benefit all members of the healthcare team who are involved in the use and processing of flexible endoscopes, including infection preventionists, physicians, perioperative and endoscopy RNs, and sterile processing personnel. Individuals who must make the tough decisions related to these controversial issues will find this presentation particularly beneficial.
