1505 - Building Ambulatory Care Infection Prevention Programs: Leadership + Risk Assessment + Business Case

Wednesday, June 14
4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Oregon Convention Center, B 115-116

A variety of forces, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and implementation of alternative payment models, is creating a significant shift in healthcare delivery from the acute, inpatient hospital setting to a variety of ambulatory settings. It is critical that all this care be provided under conditions that minimize or eliminate risks of healthcare-associated infections. As a result, regulatory and accreditation bodies have become much more involved in evaluating ambulatory care infection prevention practices. Healthcare administrators are increasingly charging hospital-based infection prevention programs with developing comprehensive ambulatory care infection prevention programs, which presents infection preventionists with a daunting leadership challenge. In addition to the sheer scope of ambulatory care practice, how care is organized, delivered, and by whom is fundamentally different and infection risks are not well understood. The session will begin with a description of the unique infection preventionist leadership challenges in creating ambulatory care infection prevention programs. Next, the presenters will discuss how to use ambulatory care infection risk assessments to guide the development of a compelling business case to demonstrate the program’s economic value to hospital administrators. For the purposes of this session, ambulatory care is defined as care provided in outpatient clinics and physician primary care offices.
