1500 - Crashing Into the Past: Entering The Pre-Antibiotic Era

Wednesday, June 14
4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Oregon Convention Center, B 113-114

We are headed for a postantibiotic era, in which even our most potent antibiotics are useless. As antibiotic- and drug-resistant infections and deaths increase, new questions arise. According to the World Health Organization, more than 700,000 die from infections caused by antibiotic- and drug-resistant pathogens globally each year. Today, more than 5,000 Americans will acquire infections resistant to first-line antibiotics. Second-line drugs will cost these patients between 50 and 200 times more than first-line drugs, plus an additional $2,000 a day for additional hospital stay. The CDC has estimated more than 2 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur annually in the United States alone, increasing healthcare costs by more than $20 billion dollars for treatments. Despite extreme efforts, more than 23,000 of these patients die. By the year 2050, it is estimated that antibiotic- and drug-resistant deaths will rise to 10 million a year globally: That calculates to one death every three seconds! How did this happen? Why don’t we have new antibiotics? What are we doing about it? What are microorganisms doing about it? How are some pathogens taking advantage of our fight against other pathogens? We will discuss these questions and then delve into the most relevant threats and current strategies going forward. CDC Urgent/Serious/Concerning Antibiotic/Drug-Resistant Pathogen threat categories and the ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) will be presented, as will the CDC-FDA-Congressional GAIN initiative.
