Presentation Type: Symposium

Individuals experiencing dysregulated anger experience the same barriers to care as those with other mental health issues (e.g. distance, insufficient clinicians, stigma, cost). However, being angry and not having control over their tempers are additional barriers to accessing traditional psychotherapeutic interventions. Further, the tendency to be resentful and untrusting adds challenges to treatment engagement. Technology-based interventions can increase the ability for individuals with dysregulated anger to access and engage in treatment by reducing both logistical and interpersonal barriers.

This presentation discusses 3 different methods of leveraging technology in treatment of dysregulated anger: 1) telehealth in which Anger Management Therapy (AMT) is delivered to veterans in rural areas via videoteleconferencing; 2) A mobile application RELAX that augments live treatment; 3) an online self-help program which allows individuals to learn Anger and Irritability Management Skills (AIMS) anonymously at the time and location of their choice. Data from a large, rigorous RCT demonstrate that AMT delivered via telehealth is as effective as face-to-face delivery.  Preliminary data suggests that RELAX and AIMS are both safe, feasible and acceptable to patients. Also, results suggest that use of the RELAX app appeared to streamline homework completions, thus requiring less time to complete assignments while achieving the same reductions in Anger outcomes. The AIMS online course is publicly available and has received very positive user feedback. Next steps in this program of research will be discussed and access to additional publically available resources will be presented.
