Moderators of PTSD Treatment Outcome: Findings From a Noninferiority Trial

Evidence-based treatments for PTSD are available and highly effective. However, a significant number of those who receive these treatments do not experience clinically meaningful symptom improvements. Gaining a better understanding of factors that influence treatment outcome is important for maximizing the benefits of the available PTSD treatments.  Unfortunately, few studies have examined moderators of PTSD treatment outcomes and those that have were not designed with sufficient statistical power to test hypotheses. In this presentation, Dr. Marx will discuss the findings on the role of possible moderators of treatment outcome of a non-inferiority trial that examined Written Exposure Therapy (WET) compared to Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Moderators of both WET and CPT examined in this study include participant gender, age, time since trauma exposure, trauma type (e.g., sexual assault, combat), comorbid depression, estimated IQ, and pre-treatment social support.  Results will be discussed in the context of improving outcomes among those with PTSD who are difficult to treat.
