Cultural responsiveness is an essential component of effective treatment personalization. We all come from diverse backgrounds, and these background highly impact recovery processes. Recovery must be personalized based on the values, traditions, and beliefs that are important to the client because recovery is influenced by the cultural background one has experienced. Language and culture affect etiology, symptomatology, course, treatment preferences, and outcome. Understanding the broader role emotion plays in an individual’s life and functioning; language acquisition; immigration and acculturative phase; as well as an individual’s culture are crucial in providing culturally responsive services to patients. For example, previous work has shown that when individuals are paired with a mental health provider from a similar cultural background, patients tend to feel more comfortable and demonstrate greater improvement.. However, many interventions for serious mental illness are not presently implemented in a way that maximizes accessibility and effectiveness for ethnic minority groups.
A key aspect of culturally responsive services is language proficiency and fluency. It is also important to discuss how acculturated/assimilated a patient is, and how it can impact the ease of navigating the mental healthcare system. Culture has important influences on all of us and mental health providers need to make a persistent attempt to maintain a collaborative relationship, to look at problem situations from the client’s point of view, and to use guided discovery to help clients find solutions that work for them in their social context. However, in order to do this, the mental health provider needs to be aware of biases and be alert for assumptions, expectations, and preconceptions on the client’s part that may interfere with successfully implementing evidence-based practice.
