Enhancing Global Learning Through Certificate Programs

Is your campus considering the development of a global certificate to enrich global learning? Join this session to explore the key types of student-centered certificate models. In addition to an overview of certificate types, the presenters will showcase a global perspectives certificate for undergraduate students and a global certificate for staff.

Christina E. Sanchez

Dr. Christina Sanchez is the Associate Director for International Programs and has worked full-time as a professional in student and academic affairs with an emphasis in international initiatives for 19 years.

At UNC-Charlotte, Christina focuses on the continued campus internationalization. Areas of professional address include the creation of an international enrichment freshman seminar, development of an international certificate program, leadership with the University College Global General Education project, partner program development, and exploration of institutional internationalization assessment.

Christina received her doctorate in intercultural communication from the University of New Mexico ; her master’s degree in college student personnel administration from James Madison University; and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and English literature from the College of William and Mary.

She presently serves as the Chair for the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship Knowledge Community. She is an active member of Trainer Corp and former mentor with the Academy. Her current advisor board work includes work with Study North Carolina and Lessons from Abroad.

Jennifer D. Fernandez-Villa

Jennifer Fernandez-Villa is the Director of International Student & Scholar Services at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). She has held this position since 2006. In this position, Jennifer advises international students and scholars and serves as the university expert on federal regulations and related procedures governing international visitors. In addition, Jennifer oversees programming activities such as, International Student Orientation, the Host Family Program, Intercultural Week and others. Prior to joining UNCW, Jennifer served as Associate Director at the Center for International Faculty & Student Services at Rutgers University. Jennifer is actively engaged in professional development. She currently serves on the Region VII board, and previously served as chair of the North Carolina Association of International Educators and as New Jersey State Rep. Jennifer serves on Trainer Corps and enjoys giving regulatory trainings at NAFSA conferences.

Jennifer is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership in which she is researching international student persistence and retention at regional, public institutions. She earned a Master's degree in Global Affairs from Rutgers University and her Bachelor's in Spanish from New York University. While attending NYU, Jennifer lived in Madrid, Spain for a year and Florence, Italy for a summer. Jennifer was born in Athens, Greece to an American father and English mother. She is married to a Spaniard and they have three young children.

Anna Hayes

Assistant Director

As an Assistant Director in the Study Abroad Office at North Carolina State University, Anna Hayes serves as the lead advisor, supervising a team of program coordinators. In addition, she manages a portfolio of semester exchange programs in Scandinavia, Central, and Eastern Europe and faculty-led programs within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She received her B.A. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master's in International Studies from NC State. Upon completion of her Master's, she began working in the Study Abroad Office at NC State, where she has been for 7 years.
