This session brings together experts from diverse institutional settings to discuss strategic approaches to defining and achieving metrics of international student success.

Rahul Choudaha

Principal Researcher & CEO

Dr. Rahul Choudaha is the principal researcher and CEO of DrEducation, LLC, a research and consulting firm specializing in global higher education. As a social entrepreneur, he co-founded,, an online training platform that supports academic and career success of international students.

Choudaha is known for his expertise in connecting data and global trends to inform growth and innovation strategies. He regularly researches, speaks, blogs, and consults on international student mobility, enrollment strategies, and student success. He is a contributor to Forbes, Huffington Post and University World News. He has chaired or presented over 100 sessions at professional conferences and has been quoted in global media including the BBC, Time, NPR and The Wall Street Journal.

Previously, Choudaha worked for over seven years at World Education Services (WES) in New York City. As the Chief Knowledge Officer and Senior Director of Strategic Development, he raised the organizational profile, built research capabilities, deepened institutional relationships, and launched innovative services.

Choudaha received the Tony Adams Award for Excellence from the European Association of International Education in recognition of his research on international student segments. He was the principal investigator of the NAFSA’s national research report on improving international student experiences.As an adjunct faculty, he has taught graduate courses on International Higher Education at New York University and Baruch College. He served as the Chair of International Education Leadership Knowledge Community at NAFSA.

Choudaha holds a doctorate in higher education from the University of Denver. He earned a master’s degree in management and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from India.

Marjorie S. Smith

Marjorie Smith has directed international student admission at the University of Denver for more than 30 years. She is responsible for crafting admission policies, determining academic potential and meeting enrollment goals for DU's undergraduate international population. Marjorie took her first recruitment trip to Asia in 1988 with the Linden Tours when there were 479 international students on DU's campus. In 2014, DU welcomed its largest ever international enrollment: 1,539 students, or 12.34% of overall enrollment. Marjorie has presented numerous workshops on international student recruitment and has made presentations on all aspects of international student admission at national AACRAO and NAFSA conferences.

Michael Elliott

Director, International Student and Scholar Services

Michael Elliott has worked in the international education field for 20 years, with a primary concentration on international student success. Currently, he is the director of international student and scholar services at SUNY Albany. Previously, Michael has worked with the University of North Carolina Greensboro and the University of Denver. His areas of interest include student development and leadership, and overall student success. a topic related to his PhD research
As a professional, Michael has worked and lived in Kenya and South Africa, studied abroad in Germany, and traveled to countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Michael earned his PhD from North Carolina A&T State University, MA and Med degrees from Ohio University and BA from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is a member of AIEA, NAFSA, RPCV Association of NE NY, the Fulbright Alumni Association, and the International Leadership Association.

Andrew PAUL. Disbury

International Director at Leeds Beckett University since 2010, Andrew established a new International Office and has delivered unprecedented growth in new overseas enrolments at Leeds Beckett. There have been increased staff and student mobilities among a larger range of exchange partners, and the international volunteering programme remains a leader in its class. Andrew previously worked at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, the British Council in China, and Sheffield Hallam University in England. Andrew has lived in China for ten years (so far!) and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He also has experience in India and the United States.
