Nicholas Higgins is the Director of newly formed Outreach Services department for the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), charged with building meaningful library programs for increasingly vulnerable groups across the city. Nick directs a unique suite of services for BPL including the Services for Older Adults department, Correctional Services, Immigrant Services, and outreach to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Some of the services Nick and his team have built in the department's first year include: multilingual arts classes for older adults, one-on-one legal support for immigrants, live video conferencing for children and their incarcerated parents, and citizenship preparation classes.
From 2009 to 2013 Nick oversaw The New York Public Library’s Correctional Services department, increasing direct Library engagement with inmates in regional jails and prisons. Nick began his career in 2006 as trainee at BPL. During that time he delivered targeted library services to children with disabilities, veterans, job seekers, and formerly incarcerated Brooklynites while serving in a variety of roles.
Nick lives with his wife and two children in Red Hook Brooklyn.
