Sioux Center Public Library
Sioux Center, Iowa
Ruth Mahaffy is the Bilingual Services Director at the Sioux Center Public Library. In addition to being responsible for bilingual programming for all ages she also coordinates outreach, technology, circulation and any number of miscellaneous projects. In the seven years that she has worked at the library, Ruth has been integral in reaching out to and developing programs and services for the Spanish speaking population. Over this time, the library has transformed to be seen as a trusted, safe, and welcoming space for immigrants. She has also established effective partnerships with other community organizations that serve English language learners, such as Promise Community Health Center, Latina Health Coalition, and Northwest Iowa Community College. Ruth co-developed a mentor program for English language learners, PIECE, where she continues to volunteer as an ESL teacher. Her bilingual programming for young children, specifically Children’s Day/Book Day, Día de los niños/Día de los niños, has been nationally recognized by the Pat Mora foundation & REFORMA.
