As mobile technologies have dramatically altered our daily habits, it is now more
important than ever that libraries take advantage of mobile technologies for outreach,
marketing, and to increase services and patronage of the library.
Three years ago, mobile accounted for 8% of browser usage. Today, it is at 33% and
continuing to gain on desktop browsing. This trend is reminiscent of the early days of
the Internet. Many saw its potential and jumped on board. Others ignored it. Given the
recent statistics published in the 2015 Pew Internet Study on Smartphone Use, libraries
can’t afford to make that mistake!
• 64% of Americans have a smartphone,
• 19%, of smartphone users rely on this device for access to online services,
because of limited or lack of access to the Internet elsewhere, and
• 10% of smartphone owners do not have access to the Internet beyond their data
And if this change wasn’t enough, customer expectations have also risen.
With this increased utilization of mobile devices for content consumption, and new
demands placed on the mobile experience offered by libraries, it is important for
libraries to use this platform. To that end, the library mobile web site needs to evolve in
order to keep pace with the changing market in terms of: rendering content on devices,
managing access to the content, and providing a full featured mobile experience that
measures up to the mobile experiences of popular retail and other web sites in order to
meet users in their digital space.
This program will explore the Monroe County Library System’s mobile strategy for
outreach and online services, as well as plans for mobile user engagement to highlight
learning initiatives and the importance of the Social-Local-Mobile (SoLoMo) principles
within their service plan. The library’s director, Patricia Uttaro, and TLC’s
CARL•Connect Discovery Product Owner, Marisa Wood, will offer presentations and
lead discussions about design, user experience and the SoLoMo philosophy and
services of the new library mobile catalog.
