Supporting International Students in Classrooms: Strategies for Promoting Intercultural Exchanges

This workshop aims to develop an understanding of possible cultural differences that may prevent international students from voicing their points of view in courses.  Through the investigation of various scenarios, educators will develop policies, procedures, and best practices for encouraging intercultural exchanges between international and domestic students within a structured curriculum.

Sarah Lopolito is the vice president for Educational Services at Pinehust Consulting Group, LLC. She began her career in education in 1997, and she has been focused on English as a second language instruction as well as the development and successful accreditation of English language institutes since 2009. As an English language institute program director, she also has experience with event planning including symposiums, International Education Week events, welcome orientations, and staff training. She earned her Master of Arts degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from The New School in New York.

Anne Kerkian

Assistant Director of English Language Learning
Brown University

Anne Kerkian is the Assistant Director of English Language Learning at Brown University. She earned her B.A. in English and Theater/Drama from Indiana University, and her M.A. in TESOL from SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, Vermont. Anne has worked as an ESL teacher in South Korea, Argentina, and Costa Rica. Before coming to Brown, she taught in the ESOL Bridge to College and Careers Program at Northern Essex Community College, and at the A.C.E. Language Institute at the University of Rhode Island.
