This session will present an overview of the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Department of State EducationUSA services that assist U.S. educational institutions with their international student recruitment activities.  The speakers will provide attendees with examples of these agencies' numerous programs, collaboration on education missions and other initiatives, and an update of the latest state study consortia activities in Region XI.

Jim Paul

Director, Boston Office
U.S. Department of Commerce

Jim Paul is Director of the Boston Office at the U.S. Department of Commerce. In this capacity, he coordinates this agency's activities in assisting Massachusetts exporters with increasing their business opportunities overseas and Massachusetts educational institutions with their international student recruitment activities. As former Education Team Leader for this agency, he organized worldwide assistance to educational institutions with promotion of their programs to international students and partners. Mr. Paul received a BA in Political Economy of Industrial Societies from the University of California, Berkeley. He later earned a MBA in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Michelle Kowalsky

Director of International Admissions
Western New England University

Michelle is the Director of International Admissions at Western New England University. She has worked in International Admissions/Education for the past 13 years starting at Catawba College in NC. Since 2005, Michelle has been working with undergraduate and graduate international students at WNE. She has participated in the strategic planning process for the growth of the international population, evaluated international credentials, and traveled extensively for the University. Outside the office, she has served as the Chair of Study MA, is a member of Trainer Corps, and has served on the Region XI Leadership Team.
