Increasing Education Abroad Participation for Students on a Tight Budget

This session will discuss ways to increase education abroad participation for students with tight budgets.  We will discuss general resources, include perspectives from a provider, and offer one creative solution that has been successful with the University of Bridgeport.  There will be time at the end to open the floor for discussion about other possible solutions and avenues that different education abroad advisors are exploring.

Brandon LaFavor

Director of Education Abroad
University of Bridgeport

Brandon LaFavor is the Director of Education Abroad for the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. He is originally from Oregon and is a graduate from both the School of Economics and the School of Romance Languages at the University of Oregon. He holds a Master's degree in International Education, is finishing his thesis for a scond Master's degree in Global Develoment and Peace, and is a Doctoral Student in International Education Leadership at the University of Bridgeport. Fluent in Spanish, his primary research interests are in the field of sustainable economic development with special attention paid to interantional education systems.

Rachael Capuano

Senior University Relations Manager
CISabroad - Center for International Studies

Since 2013, Rachael Capuano has worked at CISabroad - Center for International Studies, as the Senior University Relations Manager. Rachael works closely with faculty, staff, and students at universities in New England, to help increase global awarenss through education abroad programs. Originally from upstate New York, Rachael earned her Bachelor's degree from Western New England University in Springfield, MA. Her passion for travel have taken her to places such as New Zealand, Morocco, British Columbia, Mexico, and her favorite destination, Czech Republic. Rachael is an avid coffee drinker, dog-enthusiast, and chocoholic.

Katey C. Palumbo

Director, International Programs
Worcester State University

Katey Palumbo, the Director of International Programs at Worcester State University, has worked in the field of international education for over 15 years. In her current role, Katey counsels outgoing students pursuing study abroad opportunities as well as serving as the PDSO and RO for the campus. Katey currently serves on the NAFSA Financing Education Abroad Sub Committee. Her international experience includes living, working and teaching in Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Thailand and central Turkey.

Michael Sandy

Director, Study Abroad
Bridgewater State University

Michael Sandy is the Director of Study Abroad at Bridgewater State University’s Minnock Center for International Engagement. His 18 year career has intersected global service learning and study abroad at colleges and universities and international education institutions, consistently promoting and supporting globally-engaged students and community-based partnerships. In 2013, he was awarded the David A. Pollock Outstanding International Educator Award from the PA Council for International Education in recognition of outstanding leadership in international education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Sandy earned his master’s degree in Public and International Affairs from University of Pittsburgh and his BA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
