#StudyAbroad: Influence of Social Media and Peers on Student Experiences

How does social media influence the way students understand, experience, and share study abroad? Two recent college graduates will present their research on the formation of students’ expectations and its effects before, during, and after study abroad. An IEO and EA advisor will share how they help students navigate the impacts of social media and encourage constructive alumni participation. Join us for a discussion on the powerful role of peer contact.

My name is Nancy Chomitz and I am a recent graduate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a B.A. in Psychology. I was a member of the International Scholars Program (ISP), a three-year program that focused on study abroad through UMass Amherst. I have studied in Durban, South Africa with SIT (School for International Training) as well as a direct exchange to the University of Cape Town, South Africa. I wrote a senior thesis with three other ISP members that discussed the modern study abroad experience, with a particualr focus on social media.

Carol J. Lebold

Carol Lebold is an associate director for the International Programs Education Abroad Office (IPO) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. For more than 18 years she has worked in the field of international education. Her educational and professional background began in public health and policy, with graduate work and advanced training in intercultural communication and multicultural mediation. Her involvement with NAFSA includes appointments as presenter, trainer, and contributor to various workshops, publications and special projects. She has chaired the Committee for Underrepresentation in Education Abroad, is a member of NAFSA’s Trainer Corps, and served as a NAFSA Academy VIII Coach for Region XI.

Frances Weiner

Frances Weiner is the Alumni Relations and Marketing Coordinator of CISabroad. Additionally, she worked at Ohio University for two years as Campus Coordinator for IEP/CISabroad. She holds a BA in Psychology from Ohio University and is currently pursuing an MBA at the University of Nevada, Reno. She has also had the opportunity to assist study abroad programs on-site in Ecuador, Italy, and the United Kingdom. These experiences introduced her to the world of international education, and are her motivation to continue supporting students to pursue their dreams to study and live overseas.
