The 2016 Essentials of Psychosomatic Medicine course repeats the successful and well-received format introduced in 2014 by featuring an expanded syllabus and a broad range of talented speakers. This full-day course (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM) will present up-to-date, focused talks on 11 topics that are common to psychosomatic medicine psychiatrists. For attendees wishing a deeper dive into current issues, the following Skills Courses provide an alternative to the Essentials Course:

Few treatments have had as much clinical trial evidence as collaborative care, yet uptake into mainstream practice has been disappointingly slow. Several issues pivotal to progressive adoption versus eventual abandonment of collaborative care include the centrality of patient-reported outcomes, the role of evidence-based treatments, the site and method of care delivery, the optimal provider skill set, the synergy between stepped care and treat to target approaches, the optimal number and types of disorders treated, the interface with primary care, and mechanisms for funding. An informed debate is essential to determine whether collaborative care for mental disorders is a critical component of the accountable care pipeline or merely a pipe dream. This session will contain a lecture from research scholar Kurt Kroenke on the topic, followed by a spirited debate on the issue from senior APM leaders Peter Shapiro and Michael Sharpe. Wednesday, Nov 11, 7:00-8:30 PM; free to all attendees.
