Director, International Affairs
University of Chicago
Tamara Felden is director of the Office of International Affairs and associate dean of students in the University at the University of Chicago. She joined the University in 2003 and her office serves an international population of more than 5,000 students and scholars and their families in the undergraduate College, five graduate divisions, six professional schools, and the University's extension school. Felden greatly enjoys the challenges of a highly decentralized institution and thrives on making the US immigration system and complex institutional policy accessible to those who come to the University from abroad. In her associate dean role, she works on policy issues affecting graduate students throughout the University, a task she finds very rewarding. Before joining the University of Chicago, Felden held positions at Black Hawk College in Moline and at Augustana College in Rock Island, both in Illinois. Felden’s own history as an immigrant gives her a sense of the experience of international students and scholars and contributes to her understanding of their needs, including in a crisis. She holds degrees from the University of Maryland-College Park, including a PhD in German language and literature, and has earned certificates in Organizational Leadership and Project Management at Loyola University and the University of Chicago, both in Chicago.
