Getting Personal: Discussing Hygiene, Social, and Cultural Issues With International Students

This session will explore ways in which international student and scholar advisers can convey or explain hygiene, social, and cultural issues (sex, personal hygiene, LGBTQ, sexual assault, alcohol and drugs, panhandlers, religious fanatics, etc.) that arise when working with the international population on campus. This session was selected as the Region X conference highlight.

Mary F. Idzior

Mary Idzior is currently an Associate Director at the Slutzker Center for International Services at Syracuse University. She has worked in the field for over 25 years at both private and public institutions and with both students and scholars. She has been the Chair of NAFSA Region X, the Regional representative in the early days of the NAFSA Academy, a state rep and a former iteration of the Reg Bud.

Sherif Barsoum

Sherif Barsoum was vice president of public policy and practice at NAFSA: Association of International Educators, following a career as the director of international student and scholar services at Vanderbilt University. He has 20 years of international education experience. He came to Vanderbilt after 13 years as assistant director of the international office at Ohio State University, where he is a two-time graduate and received an MA in higher education administration. Originally from Cairo, Egypt, Sherif has lived and traveled to many countries and enjoys meeting people and learning about new cultures. He enjoys conducting cross-cultural workshops and intercultural programming. He is a huge advocate of study abroad and of international exchange. He also leads a Maymester program each year to either Egypt or Morocco.

Eric Comins

Eric has recently started a new position as the Assistant Direector for Student Success at the Intensive English Language Institute at the University of North Texas. Previously, he served as the Coordinator for Student Programs at the University at Buffalo for over 15 years. He has been a world traveler from a very young age and has studied French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and German. Originally from Central New York State (near Syracuse), he earned Master's Degree from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from the State University of New York College at Cortland in International Studies and Economics.
