This session offers an interactive examination of three major elements of a strategic international enrollment management (SIEM) plan. Presenters and participants share their insights on the multitude of variables that can be considered for inclusion in an SIEM plan, as well as strategies for sustainability and successful implementation.

Kevin Timlin

Director, Office of International Programs

Kevin Timlin is Director of International Programs at Northern Michigan University. Before that, he was assistant director for the Center for International Studies at Western Illinois University. There, he led the efforts to establish the Eta Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Delta, and served as the chapter coordinator from 2009-2012. During his tenure, Kevin won the Edward S. Blankenship Outstanding Staff Award in 2012, and the Eta Epsilon chapter was named Phi Beta Delta Outstanding Regional Chapter in 2010. Kevin was also a 2013-2014 Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) Neal Presidential Fellow. Kevin holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Northern Iowa, a master's degree in education from the University of Oklahoma, and is currently a doctoral candidate in international education from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Kevin was also a Peace Corps volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic from 1997 to 1999.


Jim Crawley

James Crawley is the Director of University Enrollment and Advising Services for ELS Educational Services, Inc. He has worked in the field of international education for 20 years, focusing on international student recrutiing and admissions, and the implementation of good practices in international enrollment management. His experience has included creating and building the international recruitment strategies for two universities; as well as participating in many international recruitment tours, and independent recruitment trips. He has worked closely with EducationUSA advisers on recruitment efforts and has presented at the state, regional and national levels on issues related to international recruitment and admissions. He has served in NAFSA leadership roles at the regional and national level, most recently serving in the NAFSA International Enrollment Management Knowledge Community Chair -stream.


David L. Di Maria

Associate Provost for International Programs
Montana State University
Bozeman, Montana

Dr. David L. Di Maria serves as the associate provost for international programs at Montana State University, where he is responsible for international partnerships, international enrollment management, international student and scholar services, international risk management, professional training programs, study abroad programs and internationalization strategy. Dr. Di Maria frequently presents, publishes, consults and trains on best practices pertaining to international education administration. He is the 2016 chair of NAFSA's International Enrollment Management Knowledge Community, an active member of NAFSA’s Trainer Corps and a former Core Education Program Dean. Outside of NAFSA, Dr. Di Maria serves as an external reviewer for the American International Recruitment Council, he is a member of the advisory council of MSU's Center for Bilingual and Multicultural Education, and he is a Neal Presidential Fellow with the Association of International Education Administrators. Dr. Di Maria earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a doctorate in educational policy and administration from the University of Minnesota. His doctoral research focused on campus services for international students.
