A Design Agenda for Bioregions

Sunday, November 8
8:00 am – 9:00 am
McCormick Place - Lakeside Center, Arie Crown Theater

John Thackara

In projects around the world, a new economy is emerging whose core value is stewardship rather than extraction. Growth, in this new story, means soils, biodiversity, and watersheds get healthier, and communities become more resilient. The challenge for designers is to help these diverse elements operate across whole landscapes and to connect social and ecological systems in healthful ways. Presenter John Thackara will focus on live projects such as leathersheds and fibersheds, food commons, social farming, collaborative water stewardship, and green infrastructures. In conclusion, he will describe the new governance models that enable diverse groups and disciplines to shape their bioregional agenda together.
