This session will provide participants with the evidence to properly assess CKD in regard to intravenous access. A rationale for establishing a “vascular team” that would specialize in determining the optimum location and IV line for advanced CKD patients will be discussed. Dr. Wayne will demonstrate through the literature, case studies and radiographic images, how the proper assessment and the use of new methods of IV access and catheters can significantly reduce destruction of the venous system in these patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe a comprehensive plan to identify CKD patient prior to insertion of IV lines
  • Discuss alternatives to placement of PICC and CVC lines for patients with advanced CKD
  • List the evidence and current guidelines for the use of alternatives to PICC and CVC in patients with advanced CKD
